19 Best Devices to Try for 2021

19 Best Devices to Try for 2021

Stocksy

Fun fact about me: Laser hair removal at home has kiiinda become my ~thing~ over the last year. Though body hair is absolutely normal—and whether you choose to get rid of it or keep it is 100 percent up to you—I personally fall into the camp of people who want silky-as-hell skin. So after making my way through every razor, waxing kit, and trimmer on the market, I’ve finally come to the conclusion that there’s a v obvious winner in the hair-removal game: lasers. Nope, I’m not talking about those expensive treatments you can get at your derm’s office—I mean those little at-home laser hair removal devices that zap off your hair with ease.

Trust: If long-term hair removal is your goal, you need to have one of these devices on your team. That’s why I spoke with dermatologist Arash Akhavan, MD, to find out everything you gotta know before you try at-home laser hair removal. Plus, the 13 best devices that really, truly work.

What is laser hair removal?

First, a refresher: Laser hair removal is a process where light (aka the laser beams) is directed onto your skin in little pulses, targeting and heating up the hair follicle to destroy a portion of it with each treatment, says Dr. Akhavan. Compared to in-office treatments (which, although pricey, are done by board-certified derms or trained professionals who know exactly what they’re doing), at-home devices have a much lower energy output, which makes them safer for you to use on your own.

Is at-home laser hair removal safe?

“At-home devices tend to be generally safe, although a real potential for adverse effects, like scarring, does exist,” says Dr. Akhavan, who highly suggests going the in-office route if you have the means (although it can cost anywhere from $200 to $1,500). “If you’re using an at-home device, don’t use it on sensitive areas—like your face and neck—and begin by patch-testing on a smaller area, then waiting three to four weeks to make sure there are no complications.”

And please read the instructions first. It’s important to know that some devices aren’t suitable for all skin tones, since not all lasers are able to properly distinguish between dark hair follicles and dark skin and can potentially burn you. A good rule of thumb? Speak to your dermatologist before you try any at-home laser devices to be on the safe side—it is your skin, after all.

Can you laser your pubic hair at home?

Even if your laser hair removal device says it’s safe for all areas, you need to proceed with caution when lasering your pubic hair. The bikini line is generally fine (again, patch test to make sure there are no negative side effects), but anywhere else down there is a no. If you want the same effect as a full Brazilian, you’ll need to get your laser hair removal done by an experienced pro.

How do you use an at-home laser hair removal device?

Remember: You need to start your treatment by first diligently reading through the instructions. Each device will vary, but it’s a good idea to keep these tips in mind:

  • Start by shaving your skin with a new razor. You want the area to be clean, dry, and free of any lotions or creams. This will help make sure your device is reaching your follicles easily and directly.
  • Patch test your skin before treating large areas. Starting with a small area of skin and waiting three to four weeks is the safest way to make sure you won’t have a bad reaction.
  • Begin with the lowest energy setting and work your way up. It takes a few sessions to really get the hang of your device, so start slow and low to avoid mistakes and/or irritation.
  • Have patience. Laser hair removal doesn’t work overnight—it takes multiple sessions over many weeks to see maximum hair reduction. Patience is key, y’all.

Alright, now what you really came here for. Keep reading for the 19 best at-home laser hair removal devices you can buy right now.

Best At-Home Laser Hair Removal for All Skin Tones

Silk’n Infinity At-Home Permanent Hair Removal

FYI: The majority of at-home laser hair removal devices don’t actually use lasers—instead, they call on intense pulsed light (IPL), which, like lasers, destroys your hair follicles with heat. This IPL device is beloved for its handheld size, customizable energy settings, and its ability to safely remove hair on all skin tones. Pro tip: Work with freshly shaved—not waxed!—skin to get the best results.

Best Handheld Laser for At-Home Hair Removal

Kenzzi IPL Hair Removal Handset

Don’t be fooled by the smaller handheld size—this at-home device is equipped for hair removal on your legs, arms, and even your bikini line. It comes with five power settings so you can customize your treatments (I’d recommend starting with the lowest setting and working your way up from there) and results start to kick in after three to four weeks.

Best Precise At-Home Laser Hair Removal

Iluminage Precise Touch Permanent Hair Remover

This small at-home hair removal device is perfect for reaching tighter, more precise areas, and it’s even gentle enough to use on your face (though, as always, if you’ve got extra sensitive skin—check in with your derm before you try anything). A combination of IPL and radiofrequency means this bb is effective, and it’s FDA-cleared for all skin tones.

Best At-Home Laser Hair Removal for All Hair Colors

Ora Iluminage Touch Permanent Hair Reduction System

It’s definitely on the pricier side, but this FDA-cleared device works on a wide range of hair colors (think: white, gray, blonde, red, brown, and black)—something you won’t find with the majority of at-home lasers. Just know that it does take time to work. Most people see noticeable hair reduction after seven weeks of continued use.

Best Fast At-Home Laser Hair Removal

Silk’n Flash & Go Express Hair Removal Device

The coolest thing about this handheld device is that it works fast. Each session takes about 20 minutes max (that’s about half the time needed for most at-home lasers, FWIW), and you’ll only need to treat the area once every two weeks for the first four to five sessions (after that, you can cut back to once a month or as needed).

Best Comfortable At-Home Laser Hair Removal

Deess Permanent Hair Removal System

The best thing about this at-home hair removal device is that it’s really comfortable. That’s thanks to the system’s cooling technology, which works to reduce any heat or inflammation you might feel from the IPL. Start with one treatment per week for six weeks and you should start to see a noticeable reduction in your body hair.

Best At-Home Laser Hair Removal for Quick Treatments

Mē Sleek Face + Body Hair Removal System

I get it: Not everyone wants to sit around and take their time with a laser hair removal device. That’s what makes this pick so great—it’s designed for quick and painless treatments (think: two minutes for your arms, eight minutes for your legs), and best of all, it’s safe for all skin tones and hair colors. That’s what I call a win-win, y’all.

Best Long-Lasting At-Home Laser Hair Removal Device

Best Affordable At-Home Laser Hair Removal Device

Amzgirl IPL Hair Removal

Don’t feel like spending a ton of $$$ on your at-home laser hair removal device? No prob, ’cause this cute little pick comes out to $129 and is actually effective. Keep in mind that it’s smaller than its pricier counterparts, so it’s best for treating concentrated areas (like your underarms or upper lip).

Best At-Home Laser Hair Removal for Beginners

Tria Beauty Hair Removal Laser 4X

There’s a reason derms are obsessed with this at-home laser hair removal device: It’s suuuper powerful, FDA-cleared, and extremely easy to use (thanks to the LED display, which guides you through the treatment and energy settings). BTW: When you turn this baby on, it scans your skin and won’t unlock unless your skin tone and hair color are safe matches.
