Trust: If long-term hair removal is your goal, you need to have one of these devices on your team. That’s why I spoke with dermatologist Arash Akhavan, MD, to find out everything you gotta know before you try at-home laser hair removal. Plus, the 13 best devices that really, truly work.

What is laser hair removal?

First, a refresher: Laser hair removal is a process where light (aka the laser beams) is directed onto your skin in little pulses, targeting and heating up the hair follicle to destroy a portion of it with each treatment, says Dr. Akhavan. Compared to in-office treatments (which, although pricey, are done by board-certified derms or trained professionals who know exactly what they’re doing), at-home devices have a much lower energy output, which makes them safer for you to use on your own.

Is at-home laser hair removal safe?

“At-home devices tend to be generally safe, although a real potential for adverse effects, like scarring, does exist,” says Dr. Akhavan, who highly suggests going the in-office route if you have the means (although it can cost anywhere from $200 to $1,500). “If you’re using an at-home device, don’t use it on sensitive areas—like your face and neck—and begin by patch-testing on a smaller area, then waiting three to four weeks to make sure there are no complications.”

And please read the instructions first. It’s important to know that some devices aren’t suitable for all skin tones, since not all lasers are able to properly distinguish between dark hair follicles and dark skin and can potentially burn you. A good rule of thumb? Speak to your dermatologist before you try any at-home laser devices to be on the safe side—it is your skin, after all.

Can you laser your pubic hair at home?

Even if your laser hair removal device says it’s safe for all areas, you need to proceed with caution when lasering your pubic hair. The bikini line is generally fine (again, patch test to make sure there are no negative side effects), but anywhere else down there is a no. If you want the same effect as a full Brazilian, you’ll need to get your laser hair removal done by an experienced pro.

How do you use an at-home laser hair removal device?

Remember: You need to start your treatment by first diligently reading through the instructions. Each device will vary, but it’s a good idea to keep these tips in mind:

• Start by shaving your skin with a new razor. You want the area to be clean, dry, and free of any lotions or creams. This will help make sure your device is reaching your follicles easily and directly.
• Patch test your skin before treating large areas. Starting with a small area of skin and waiting three to four weeks is the safest way to make sure you won’t have a bad reaction.
• Begin with the lowest energy setting and work your way up. It takes a few sessions to really get the hang of your device, so start slow and low to avoid mistakes and/or irritation.
• Have patience. Laser hair removal doesn’t work overnight—it takes multiple sessions over many weeks to see maximum hair reduction. Patience is key, y’all.
