What Is Amazon Prime Day?

Amazon Prime Day started in July of 2015 as a one-day sale event intended to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. It’s since morphed into an annual two-day affair in which Amazon offers major discounts across all of its product categories.

In addition to the 48-hour deals, Amazon typically also drops thousands of Lightning Deals, which are only available for a very limited time—usually two to six hours.

When Is Amazon Prime Day 2022?

Prime Day 2022 kicked off at 12 a.m. PDT on July 12 and extended through 11:59 p.m. PDT on July 13. The 2022 dates also marks a return to Prime Day’s original July timing—it was held in October in 2020 due to the pandemic and June in 2021.

Do You Need A Prime Membership To Shop Prime Day Deals?

Yes—in order to have taken advantage of Prime Day deals, you’ll have to be an Amazon Prime member. If you’ve never had Amazon Prime before, you can start with a 30-day free trial. After the trial is over, membership costs $119 for a full year or $13 per month. If you’re a college student, you can get a 6-month free trial followed by a discounted rate of $6.50 per month for as long as you’re in school.

If you’re not already a member, here’s everything you need to know about how to sign up to enjoy Prime benefits (including ways to get a Prime membership for free or at a discount).

Is Prime Day Worth It?

It depends on what you’re shopping for. Prime Day typically features deep discounts on items like Amazon devices, robot vacuums, headphones and kitchen appliances. For many of those items, you won’t see discounts this good again until Black Friday or Cyber Monday. In those cases, taking advantage of Prime Day deals is definitely worth it. For other categories like fashion, beauty and pets, the markdowns can be more hit or miss.
